DOMINANT 7 Chords

Most of you will be familiar and may already use dominant 7 chords

A dominant 7 chord is simply a major chord with an added 7th.

Dominant 7 chords are simply called 7 chords like this: G7, C7 etc...

Most commonly we'll find them used for an embellishment for the V chord, like so.

Once you memorize these (dominant) forms it'll be easy to find the others  - I'll show you some tricks here...

RULE: Any chord can be a dominant - see related video and article

The Dominant chord creates an instability that requires the I chord (or TONIC) for resolution. It actually pulls towards the I chord (or TONIC).

The 7 chord pulls towards the I chord (or TONIC) better than the major chord. This is why a 7 chord is typically used for the V chord.

You can learn more about this in the "Secrets of the Chord Chain" books

Although they are typically used for the V chord any chord can be a dominant.

MAJOR 7 Chords
