In this new series we look at exactly how to strum some different songs - I show you how and why we vary the strumming patterns - typically we don't want to use the same pattern for the whole song - we want to vary it to add interest.

To better understand the strums in this series get my PLAY UKULELE NOW METHOD and SONGBOOK - if you're just starting out that's a great book to learn chords and strums - in my FREE eBook, you'll get the first 24 pages of the PLAY UKULELE NOW METHOD and SONGBOOK and be able to start playing in minutes with some basic chords and strums.

It's best to learn strums in the resources above because they are usually thought with lots of up and down arrows which many beginners find difficult to understand and usually wind up playing them with incorrect timing (they don't sound right), and then they wonder why they can't strum along with songs!

It's always best to use rhythm notation and counting to insure the strums are played correctly.

STUDY NOTES  & PDF:

Always start very slow when learning something new.

How to strum O COME, O COME EMMANUEL - Learn exactly how to strum this song - patterns etc...

Here we have a slow song so we want a slow easy strum. We start out with half notes - strum each chord slowly with your thumb, later in the song when the rhythm changes we vary the strum a little, to keep it simple and easy to play and sing the strum is similar to the sung rhythm.

For the up strums at the end of the measures (starting in measure 14)  strum just two or three of the top strings (strings 1 & 2 or strings 1, 2 & 3) - not all of them - to make the strum more of an accent and to add further interest to the piece. Thumb for the down strum and first finger for the up strum.

These are suggested patterns with some variations so you can get an idea on how to very patterns a little (for those that need it or like to have it) - certainly you can use many other patterns as well...
