In this new series we look at exactly how to strum some different songs - I show you how and why we vary the strumming patterns - typically we don't want to use the same pattern for the whole song - we want to vary it to add interest.

It's best to learn strums in the resources above because they are usually thought with lots of up and down arrows which many beginners find difficult to understand and usually wind up playing them with incorrect timing (they don't sound right), and then they wonder why they can't strum along with songs!
It's always best to use rhythm notation and counting to insure the strums are played correctly.

Always start very slow when learning something new.
BELOW: Strum and count - use any chord to practice the strumming and counting below... (Click on the picture to see it up close)
Here we use a simple strum that compliments the vocal part nicely and is easy to sign along with - to vary the strum we have some sections where we have three strums rather than the strum pattern.
For the strums use a down strum on the half note and then a down strum followed by an up strum for the two 8th notes that follow, in the measures with quarter note strums (6, 14 and 23) use all down strums. We end the song with a half note (count 1, 2).
Try accenting the 1st beat of every measure - play it a little louder to help establish the feel of 3/4 time. To do this, play the whole thing quieter and then make the 1st beat of each measure louder.
These are suggested patterns with some variations so you can get an idea on how to very patterns a little (for those that need it or like to have it) - certainly you can use many other patterns as well...
