In this new series we look at exactly how to strum some different songs - I show you how and why we vary the strumming patterns - typically we don't want to use the same pattern for the whole song - we want to vary it to add interest.
All the strums in this series are in my PLAY UKULELE NOW METHOD and SONGBOOK - if you're just starting out that's a great book to learn chords and strums - in my FREE eBook, you'll get the first 24 pages of the PLAY UKULELE NOW METHOD and SONGBOOK and be able to start playing in minutes with some basic chords and strums.
It's best to learn strums in the resources above because they are usually thought with lots of up and down arrows which many beginners find difficult to understand and usually wind up playing them with incorrect timing (they don't sound right), and then they wonder why they can't strum along with songs!
It's always best to use rhythm notation and counting to insure the strums are played correctly.
STUDY NOTES & PDF:
Always start very slow when learning something new.
The symbols above the strums in the first measure indicate strum direction - the arrow an up strum and the other symbol indicates down strums.
BELOW: Count 1, 2, 3, 4 evenly and slowly then add in the &'s. Down strums on the counts and up strums on the &'s for this one...
Here we use the country or rock strum - it's in the PLAY UKULELE NOW METHOD and SONGBOOK and in my FREE eBook with some variations here and there to create some interest.
There are a few half notes (like at the end of measure 4) and a different pattern for measure 15, the pattern found in measure 15 could be used in measure 7 a well.
Were we find a half note in the vocals we use a half note to create a short pause and where we have a little more going on in the vocal, we put a little more in the strum - but only at the end.
You'll notice I suggest an easy D7 here - it's a chord without a root note (I talk about these in my UKULELE CHORD TRICKS: SIMPLIFY ANY CHORD book) you may use the regular D7 (2223) if you like.
These are suggested patterns with some variations so you can get an idea on how to very patterns a little (for those that need it or like to have it) - certainly you can use many other patterns as well...
