Here we start a new journey as we learn to play fingerstyle ukulele solos with campanella passages, and beautiful chords as we learn lot's of cool tricks that will make you a better solo player.

Just like I do in my Christmas book: "A Ukulele for Christmas: Fingerstyle Solos," I'll show you both right and left hand fingerings!

We start with the bugle call - TAPS. In this piece we look at right hand fingering and alternation of p and i or i and m for notes on the same string. We also learn drop thumbing.

Proper right hand fingering helps you play more efficiently, get some great new sounds and make for a much more beautiful performance.

NOTES:

You may want to watch some fingerpicking videos first to understand how to hold the uke and proper right hand position as well as start to get those fingers moving...

Here are a few:

Top 5  Fingerpicking Patterns - here I demonstrate how to properly hold the uke and proper right hand position. The fingerpicking patterns make great exercises to get you ready for fingerstyle!

5 Next Level fingerpicking patterns - more patterns and more great exercises.

It is best to play along with the video to get this piece down with the proper fingering techniques.

I talk about two approaches for the note on the second string (drop thumbing is one of them) in measure 4, either i or p can be used.

When we drop the thumb down to play notes on the second string it called 'drop thumbing' - this term come from banjo and folk guitar techniques. You will find it has a different sound than using the first finger.

When  I play the piece at the end I don't use 'drop thumbing.'

You'll notice in measure 6 we don't alternate - we have 2 p's in a row, after a longer note value we need not alternate (unless you want to since the finger and the thumb have different sound qualities.

When plucking a note with your finger you may get a bit of that fingernail sound as your nail brushes across the string after it's plucked.

Before playing this listen to a few versions of it - make sure they are trumpet or bugle versions that you listen to. You should always listen to and get familiar with a piece before playing a fingerstyle version of it.

The versions of a piece you listen to to get to know it should not be a  ukulele version but any other popular version played on any instrument.

This piece may appear with different note values - keep in mind we are playing this based on listening to it and playing our version - so the note values may have noting to do with how you play the piece.
