The island strum could be the most popular strum, and if a beginner has a few other strums down this could still be a challenge because of the syncopation - the 3rd beat is 'skipped.'
Most beginners will mess up the timing while trying to skip the 3rd beat and I've found that the trick in the video will help almost anyone to play the island strum correctly almost instantly!
Watch:
NOTES: always strum as follows: Down strums on the counts and up strums on the &'s.
Always tap your foot and (or) count out loud to keep time (like I do in the video). Get in the habit of doing this whenever practicing...
Start slow when ever learning something new and increase speed as you get better at it.
